7 Common Mistakes in Prayer That Can Reduce Perfection

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — Prayer is the main worship that is the pillar of religion in the life of a Muslim. However, without realizing it, many people still make mistakes when performing it.

Starting from looking at the sky, closing your eyes, to reading the reading loudly. If left unchecked, this mistake not only reduces the perfection of worship, but can also make prayer invalid. Therefore, understanding the general mistakes during prayer is important so that the worship carried out is really in accordance with guidance.

The following are a variety of mistakes that are often found when praying, both in congregation or alone. This is based on information gathered from various sources.

Mistakes that are often found during prayer

1. Looking at the sky

Mistakes that are common enough are to direct their gaze up while praying. Sometimes there are people who perform prayers while looking up to the sky, even though this is clearly prohibited by the Messenger of Allah. He said:

“Why did anyone direct their gaze to the sky when praying?” His voice rose until he said, “Let them immediately stop it, or God will really revoke their vision.” (HR. Bukhari)

2. Close your eyes

Another mistake that is also related to view is to close the eyes when praying. Some people close their eyes to the intention of wanting to be more solemn, but the scholars mention that it is the law makruh. Sheikh Shalih al-Fauzan explained:

“It is understood to close both eyes in prayer for no reason, because it includes the habits of Jews. However, if there is a need, for example in front of him there is something that can interfere with the solemnity of his prayer, such as ornaments or decoration then it is okay to close the eyes.”

Therefore, you should not close your eyes when praying except under certain conditions that can indeed interfere with solemnity.

3. Prostration is not perfect

The next mistake is not prostration perfectly. Even though in prostration there are seven limbs who are required to stick to the floor. As the hadith of Ibn Abbas Radhiyallahu ‘anhu, the Prophet Muhammad said:

أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أَسْجُدَ عَلَى سَبْعَةِ أَعْظُمٍ عَلَى الْجcept وَالرُّكْبَتَيْنِ وَأَطْرَافِ الْقَدَمَيْنِ وَلَا نَكْف above

“I was ordered to prostrate with seven members: the forehead (he gave a signal with his hand pointing at the nose), both palms, both knees, and the tips of the toes. And do not hold hair or clothes.” (HR. Bukhari)

Unfortunately, many when prostration only pressed the forehead without the nose, or lifted the legs so that the fingertips did not touch the floor. Though it includes mistakes that can reduce the perfection of prayer.

4. Do not tidy up Saf Prayer

In prayer in congregation, we often hear that the priest reminds pilgrims to straighten and close ranks. This is part of the perfection of prayer, as the words of the Prophet Muhammad:

“Straighten your ranks, because the straight saf is part of the upholding of prayer.” (HR. Bukhari)

This rule applies to all worshipers regardless of age. Therefore, before the prayer in congregation begins, pay attention to our right and left position and then close the line so that the prayer is more perfect.

5. Not focused, talk, or laugh

Prayer demands full solemnity because a servant is facing Allah SWT. Talking, laughing, or doing things that neglect will damage the prayer can even cancel it. Rasulullah SAW said:

“In fact, this prayer must not be in it there are human words. He is only dhikr, prayer beads, takbir, and reading the Koran.” (HR. Muslim)

6. Read the reading loudly

Another mistake that is sometimes encountered is reading prayer or reading prayer in a loud voice to disturb others. Though prayer in prayer should be read softly, full of submission, and fear of God. As His Word:

“And mention the name of your Lord in your heart by humming yourself and fear, and with a loud voice, in the morning and evening. And do not be among the negligent people.” (Al-A’raf: 205)
