Deadly Sibling Dispute Over Inheritance in South Tangerang

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — A tragic inheritance dispute in South Tangerang has ended in fratricide. A 52-year-old man, identified by the initial F, murdered his elder brother, N (65), following a prolonged conflict over the distribution of their late parents’ property. The incident shocked residents of Bambu Apus Village, Pamulang District, where the fatal stabbing occurred.

According to South Tangerang Police Chief AKBP Victor Daniel Henry Inkiriwang, the murder took place on Wednesday (30/4) at around 11:00 a.m. on Jalan Warung Diman. The motive behind the crime stemmed from deep-rooted resentment and family tensions that had built up over several years.

“The perpetrator was furious because the family home left by their parents was allegedly mortgaged by his siblings, including the victim, without sharing the proceeds,” Victor said in a statement issued on Saturday. He added that F felt deceived and marginalized in the inheritance process.

Police investigations also revealed a psychological component behind the attack. F claimed that N frequently humiliated him verbally, using language that he felt degraded his pride and self-worth. Over time, this emotional abuse appeared to fuel F’s decision to take matters into his own hands.

“The resentment grew stronger, and eventually, the perpetrator planned the murder,” Victor explained.

On the day of the incident, F waited until he saw N riding past on a motorcycle. Armed with a sickle he had prepared earlier, F launched his attack. The first strike aimed at the victim’s stomach was dodged, but the second swing landed on N’s left shoulder, causing a deep and fatal wound.

Passersby who witnessed the aftermath of the attack immediately contacted authorities. Emergency services and police officers responded to the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead before he could receive medical assistance.

Following the report, Victor mobilized a joint investigation team to identify and apprehend the suspect. The team acted swiftly, managing to track and arrest F within the same area in Pamulang, South Tangerang, shortly after the incident.

“The team worked quickly to prevent the suspect from fleeing and to ensure public safety,” Victor said. He also praised the local community for their cooperation in providing timely information.

F is now in police custody and faces serious legal consequences. Authorities have charged him under Article 340 of the Indonesian Criminal Code for premeditated murder, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment or 20 years. Subsidiary charges include Article 338 (intentional murder), Article 351 paragraph (3) (aggravated assault resulting in death), and Article 2 paragraph (1) of Emergency Law No. 12 of 1951 for possession of a deadly weapon.

This case highlights the devastating consequences that unresolved family conflicts, particularly over inheritance, can have. Legal experts emphasize the importance of transparent and fair inheritance processes to avoid similar tragedies. Mediation and legal consultation are often recommended in high-tension inheritance disputes to prevent escalation into violence.

Authorities urge the public to seek legal or psychological assistance when dealing with emotionally charged family disagreements, especially those involving property or financial matters.

As the investigation continues, police are compiling further evidence and witness statements. Meanwhile, F awaits trial, and the family now mourns the loss of one brother while facing the tragic downfall of another.
