Rano Karno Leads Jakarta’s Fight Against Thuggery

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE— The Jakarta Provincial Government has taken firm steps to address the ongoing issue of thuggery in the capital. Deputy Governor Rano Karno confirmed that the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) would be mobilized in a coordinated effort with the National Police to eradicate criminal intimidation practices that continue to plague several areas of the city.

Speaking in South Jakarta on Sunday, Rano Karno emphasized that this policy aligns with the recent directive issued by President Prabowo Subianto, who instructed government officials to take swift and effective action against so-called premanism — a term widely used in Indonesia to describe acts of thuggery, extortion, and intimidation by criminal groups.

“The President has instructed this, and the National Police Chief has echoed the call. We must take concrete action to resolve this issue,” Rano stated.

To enforce this directive, Polda Metro Jaya — the Jakarta Metropolitan Police — has launched integrated operations involving both preemptive and preventive strategies, followed by law enforcement (repressive) measures when necessary. According to Police Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi, the operation is structured to target known hotspots of thug activity, such as public markets, bus terminals, train stations, seaports, illegal parking zones, and densely populated residential areas.

“These operations are not merely reactive. They are supported by community education initiatives and increased supervision in vulnerable locations,” said Ade Ary.

He further explained that public awareness campaigns will precede any enforcement measures to ensure that residents understand the objectives and the importance of reclaiming public spaces from criminal control. Only when violations persist will officers take direct action against perpetrators.

The involvement of Satpol PP, under the coordination of Jakarta’s municipal government, is crucial in ensuring local administrative support for these operations. Satpol PP officers will assist in patrolling key areas, supporting police enforcement, and maintaining public order during the crackdown.

Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Karyoto has issued instructions to all police chiefs and precinct commanders under his jurisdiction to prioritize the eradication of thug behavior. The initiative is framed as part of a broader effort to restore public trust in law enforcement and increase the sense of safety among Jakarta’s residents.

Rano Karno, who is widely known both as a public official and a cultural icon, has taken a personal stance in leading this effort. His visibility and public trust are seen as added assets in mobilizing community support. “Jakarta belongs to its citizens, not to those who exploit fear and disorder. We will continue this mission until residents feel truly safe,” Rano concluded.

This new policy marks a significant shift in local governance, signaling Jakarta’s readiness to tackle entrenched social issues with a more assertive and structured approach. The collaboration between central leadership, local government, police forces, and community organizations is expected to create a sustainable model for law enforcement and civic engagement.

As the campaign unfolds over the coming weeks, authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activities or areas under the influence of criminal elements. The hope is to build a more secure and orderly capital city, free from fear and unlawful coercion.
