German Foreign Minister: Russian-Ukraine War can have an impact on Indo-Pacific

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) —  German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul argues that the war between Russia and Ukraine does not only have an impact on the order of peace in Europe, but can also affect security in the Indo-Pacific region.

“This is because the Russian war machine partially depends on troops and ammunition from North Korea, as well as significant economic support from China. All of this shows that European and Indo-Pacific security is very closely related to each other,” Foreign Minister Wadephul said in a public discussion in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The German Foreign Minister said the turmoil that occurred in the Indo-Pacific region had a direct impact on European security and also vice versa, because European Union countries had partnerships with countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

He gave an example, when Pandemic stopped production paths around the world, Germany and other European Union countries realized that supply chain disorders in Southeast Asia could cause scarcity of semiconductors in Europe.

In addition to highlighting the Russian-Ukraine War which affected both regions, Wadephul also mentioned the Chinese military attitude in the South China Sea which he acted aggressively and could weaken the international order.

“The increasing aggressive attitude of the Chinese military in the South China Sea not only threatens Asian security, but also weakens the international order based on the rules. With the main trade routes that cross this region, these conditions also raise economic risks,” he said.

“The same thing applies to the Taiwan Strait – each escalation will bring serious consequences for global security and prosperity, and directly affect the interests of Germany and Europe,” Wadephul added.

Responding to the turmoil that could have an impact on one another between the European Union and Indo Pacific regions, Wadephul called for the importance of strengthening security cooperation, especially with Indonesia which was considered in line with Germany in prioritizing international law, freedom of navigation, and sovereignty in order to maintain regional security and security.

“This is the reason we have expanded our strategic involvement in the Indo-Pacific region. Since 2021, our armed forces routinely carry out routine placements in Indo-Pacific with the aim of strengthening defense and interoperability cooperation,” he said.

The German armed forces were involved in Talisman Saber multinational training in Australia and the mission of navigation freedom in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.

“There will be no security, and there will be no prosperity, if the islands sink into the sea, where climate change destroys our planet. Likewise, there will be no security in the midst of the scarcity of food and energy,” said Wadephul.
