JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) – Before welcoming the celebration of Eid al-Adha, Muslims can do the sunnah fasting. One opportunity to get the reward of worship and erase sin when Eid al-Adha besides the sacrifice.
Eid al-Adha is held on the 10th of Dzulhijjah. According to the Hijri calendar issued by the Ministry of Religion (Kemenag), Eid al-Adha Day 1446 Hijriyah fell on June 6, 2025.
By running the sunnah before Eid al-Adha, it will bring many abundant benefits and rewards for Muslims. Therefore, it is unfortunate if the moment of full blessings is passed.
In addition, the virtue of sunnah fasting will also get protection by Allah SWT from the heat of hellfire. As Rasulullah SAW once said from Abu Sa’id Al Khudri:
“Every servant of Allah SWT who fasts a day because of Allah SWT, then Allah SWT will keep his face away from the fire of hell to a distance of 70 years.” (Muslim HR).
Sunnah fasting before Eid al-Adha there were three types, namely Dzulhijjah fasting, Tarwiyah fasting, and Arafat fasting.
These three fasting has different virtue and time of implementation, but complement each other in improving the quality of worship and drawing closer to Allah SWT in this glorious month.
Three Sunnah Fasting Before Eid al -Adha
1. Dhulhijjah fasting (1-7 dzulhijjah)
Dzulhijjah fasting was held in the first seven days in the month of Dzulhijjah. In the Calendar AD 2025, it coincided on May 28 to June 3.
This practice is highly recommended because it includes the habits of the Prophet. In addition, the first ten days of Dzulhijjah were a time full of blessings and charity that was loved by Allah SWT.
In the hadith of Ibn ‘Abbas, the Messenger of Allah said, “There is not a pious deed that is more loved by God exceeding the pious deeds that are carried out in these days (ie the first 10 days of the month of Dzulhijjah).”
The time for the implementation of Dzulhijjah fasting is the same as fasting in general, which starts from the dawn before dawn and breaking the fast at sunset.
The intention of fasting sunnah dzulhijjah
Nawaitu Shouma Syahri Dzulhijjah Sunnatan Lillahi Ta’ala
Meaning: “I intend to fast the sunnah of the month of Dhulhijjah because of Allah Ta’ala”
2. Tarwiyah Fasting (8 Dzulhijjah)
After fasting Dzulhijjah, Muslims can continue the fasting of tarwiyah. Tarwiyah fasting was carried out on the 8th of Dzulhijjah, where according to the Calendar AD 2025 it fell on June 4.
This fasting has an extraordinary virtue, because it is mentioned in the hadith that fasting on the day of the reward is like fasting a full year.
“Who is fasting for 10 days, then for every day like fasting a month. And for fasting on Tarwiyah days such as fasting a year …” (HR. Abus Syekh al-Ishfahani and Ibnu Najar).

3. Arafat fasting (9 Dzulhijjah)
Arafat fasting is the most important sunnah fasting among the three, carried out on the 9th of Dzulhijjah. Based on the AD 2025 calendar, Arafat fasting fell on June 5.
Arafat Sunnah Fasting is also related to the history of obedience and sincerity of the Prophet Ibrahim as of Allah SWT’s command to sacrifice his son, the Prophet Ismail.
The virtue in the fasting of Arafat is very large because it can erase sin for two years, which is a year ago and a year to come, as is the words of the Prophet:
“Fasting Day Arafat can eliminate the two years of sins that have been released and coming, and Ashura fasting (10 Muharram) abolishes a year -free year” (Muslim HR).
In fact, for Muslims who do not undergo the pilgrimage, it is highly recommended to carry out this Arafat fasting.
