London, UK (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — In a significant development, President of the European Union (EU) Council, Charles Michel, disclosed on Friday (March 22, 2024) that Spain, Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia are prepared to acknowledge the state of Palestine once appropriate conditions are met.
Michel emphasized that this move would serve as leverage to initiate peace negotiations. Speaking to journalists at the conclusion of the EU summit in Brussels, he underscored the importance of commencing the process of recognizing Palestine.
He stressed the necessity for collective action from both sides to achieve this objective. Despite the fact that the debate on recognizing Palestine was not extensively deliberated in recent discussions, Michel asserted it remains a crucial decision for every EU member state to consider.
Acknowledging that some members have already recognized Palestine as a sovereign state, Michel underscored the importance of initiating a structured process towards recognition and recognizing the steps taken by authorities, particularly in Israel, as part of that process.
“This wasn’t a topic we discussed yesterday evening, but we’ve deeply engaged in the two-state solution, and the goal is for two nations to live side by side in security, mutual recognition, that’s the goal, and that’s why we’re coordinating with all our member states,” he stated.
“There’s a process, so this can be seen as leverage to take steps and support efforts to restart peace negotiations,” Michel continued.
This announcement marks a significant step towards advancing the peace process in the region and underscores the EU’s commitment to facilitating dialogue and stability in the Middle East.
