Europe Boost Security in Wake of Moscow Attack Islamic State Claim

Europe (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — In response to the recent attack on a suburban Moscow concert hall on Friday (22/03/2024), claimed by an affiliate of the Islamic State group, European nations have heightened their security measures, echoing concerns over the extremist threat. Italy and France, in particular, have ramped up surveillance and checks in anticipation of major upcoming events.

Following France’s lead, Italy convened a national security council meeting resulting in the decision to bolster security during Holy Week observances leading up to Easter weekend. The Italian Interior Ministry emphasized increased vigilance, especially in areas of high foot traffic and sensitive locations. This decision comes amidst Pope Francis’ busy schedule of events in Rome and at the Vatican.

Meanwhile, Germany maintains its security alert level, with authorities acknowledging the persistent threat posed by Islamic extremists. Despite the recent Moscow attack, Germany’s Interior Ministry spokesperson noted that the risk assessment remains unchanged. However, vigilance remains a top priority.

In Serbia, visible security presence has also surged, with armed officers patrolling the streets of Belgrade. President Aleksandar Vucic announced heightened security measures at sports venues and shopping malls in the capital, eliciting criticism from opponents who view the move as unnecessarily alarming the populace.

The affiliate of the Islamic State group, known by various designations including ISIS-K, IS-K, or ISPK, has claimed responsibility for the Moscow attack, a claim corroborated by U.S. and Western officials. Originating from Central Asia, this affiliate has been notorious for its activities in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s ascension to power in 2021. Notably, it orchestrated the deadly Kabul airport bombing in August 2021 and the bomb attack in Kerman, Iran, earlier this year.

In Europe, IS-K has drawn the attention of authorities, particularly in Germany and France, where it has been linked to several alleged plots. From a planned attack near Cologne Cathedral to a foiled attempt near the Swedish parliament, the group’s presence has prompted increased security measures and raised concerns of further attacks.

French President Emmanuel Macron, acknowledging intelligence pointing to an “IS entity” behind the Moscow attack, underscored the necessity of precautionary measures. While not explicitly naming IS-K, Macron’s remarks shed light on France’s heightened security alert in response to the evolving threat landscape.

As Europe braces for significant events like the Paris Olympics and the European Championship in Germany, the concerted efforts to fortify security underscore the region’s resolve to counter the extremist menace and ensure the safety of its citizens.
