Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — Malaysia suffered losses of up to 800 million ringgit (RM), equivalent to approximately Rp2.6 trillion in 2023, due to the impact of floods, as reported by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, the Head of Statistics Malaysia, stated in a media release accessed in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (12/03/2024) that the total loss due to floods amounted to RM800 million (2022, RM1 billion or around Rp3.3 trillion), equivalent to 0.04 percent (2022, 0.06 percent) compared to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Residential areas suffered losses of RM168.3 million or approximately Rp556.89 billion, vehicles RM22.3 million or about Rp73.78 billion, manufacturing RM10.3 million or roughly Rp34.08 billion, commercial premises RM53.2 million or around Rp176 billion, agriculture RM120.6 million or about Rp399 billion, and public assets and infrastructure totaled RM380.7 million or approximately Rp1.25 trillion.
In terms of residential areas, Johor recorded the highest losses at RM121.9 million or about Rp404.06 billion, followed by Kelantan at RM15.4 million or approximately Rp51.04 billion, and Sabah at RM11 million or around Rp36.46 billion. For the state of Johor, the districts with the highest losses were Batu Pahat followed by Segamat and Muar.
In Kelantan, Pasir Mas was the district with the highest property losses in residential areas, followed by Tanah Merah and Tumpat. Meanwhile, the districts of Kota Marudu and Pitas recorded the highest losses for the state of Sabah, followed by Kudat and Telupid.
Regarding vehicles, the three states with the highest losses were Johor at RM15.9 million or approximately Rp52.65 billion, Selangor at RM1.8 million or about Rp5.96 billion, and Sabah at RM1.6 million or around Rp5.29 billion. Batu Pahat district in Johor recorded the highest vehicle damage losses, followed by Segamat and Muar.
In Selangor, Petaling district recorded the highest vehicle damage, while other districts experienced losses of less than RM100,000 or about Rp331 million. Kota Marudu district recorded the highest losses in Sabah, followed by Pitas and Kudat.
For manufacturing sector damages, Johor recorded losses of RM10.3 million or approximately Rp34.1 billion. Segamat district was the highest in terms of manufacturing sector losses, followed by Johor Bahru and Muar.
