Beijing (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a reminder to Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Taiwan to remain vigilant following a series of aftershocks that have rocked the region.
In an official statement released by the Indonesian Trade and Economic Office (KDEI) Taipei and received by ANTARA, it was mentioned that there has been an increase in the intensity of aftershocks in the Eastern part of Taiwan. Therefore, KDEI Taipei urges all WNIs in Taiwan, particularly in the Hualien region, to stay vigilant.
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Hualien region in eastern Taiwan on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, in the early hours, with a depth of 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles). The earthquake was also felt as far as the capital city of Taipei.
The advisory also emphasizes the importance for WNIs in Taiwan to continue monitoring information updates from Taiwanese authorities and KDEI Taiwan.
In efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of WNIs, if anyone is affected or aware of WNIs affected by the earthquake, they are encouraged to immediately contact KDEI Taipei through the PWNI-Pensosbud hotline at +886901132000 or +886987587000.
Aftershocks have continued to occur since the initial earthquake that struck the island on April 3, 2024, in Hualien. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4, resulted in at least 17 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries.
Previously, on Monday, April 22, 2024, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred around 17:08 local time. The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau reported that a 6.0 magnitude earthquake occurred at 02:26 in the early hours, followed by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake six minutes later.
Taiwan, situated at the intersection of two tectonic plates, frequently experiences earthquakes. Therefore, the reminder to remain vigilant and prepared in facing earthquake situations is crucial for WNIs in the region.
