Geneva, Switzerland (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — In a statement released on Sunday (24/03/2024), Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation (BKSAP), Fadli Zon, reaffirmed the consistent commitment of Indonesia in supporting Palestine in the global parliamentary arena.
Zon emphasized that Indonesia, through its representation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) 148th session held in Geneva, Switzerland, is actively advocating for the resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict as a critical international issue.
“The Palestine issue demands a resounding voice within the IPU. During our meeting six months ago in Angola, we initiated discussions and garnered support from over 60 percent of attending parliamentary members regarding the Palestinian cause. Typically, these issues undergo presentation and subsequent voting. Once a decision is reached, it will be followed up and implemented by the IPU through various concrete measures,” Zon explained.
Furthermore, Zon highlighted collaborative efforts between Indonesia and the Malaysian parliament, manifesting in an emergency proposal concerning the situation in Palestine. This proposal outlines specific provisions aimed at extending full support for humanitarian efforts in Palestine.
“We urge both nations to promptly cease hostilities in accordance with the drafted items, addressing immediate ceasefire, humanitarian assistance, and other essential humanitarian concerns,” he asserted.
Zon underscored Indonesia’s pivotal role in reinforcing various global issues, including women’s rights, economic matters, and fundamental human rights within the IPU.
“The IPU serves as a platform for extensive discussions on political, economic, and social issues, including the engagement of young and women parliamentarians, in which Indonesia actively participates,” he remarked.
Indonesia’s parliamentary involvement extends to committees such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Peace and Securities, the Middle East Question, Women Parliamentarians, and Young Parliamentarians.
