TEHRAN, IRAN (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — Iran and the United States (US) began the fourth round of indirect talks mediated by Oman regarding Iran’s nuclear programs and US economic sanctions on Tehran.
The meeting took place in the capital city of Oman, Muscat, on Sunday (11/5), reported the Iranian news agency, Isna.
The latest round of negotiations was held a month after the inaugural meeting, which was also held in Oman in mid-April, and marked the start of the dialogue after two weeks, so far, has become the longest break in the process of nuclear negotiations.
The first and third rounds of indirect talks between the US and Iran took place in Muscat on April 12 and 26, while the second round was held in Rome on April 19.
The process began after US President Donald Trump sent a letter to the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in early March, which contained a new agreement offer related to the Iranian nuclear program and the threat of using military power if the diplomatic path failed.
Iran rejects direct negotiations, but is willing to engage in an indirect dialogue.
In 2015, Iran signed a nuclear agreement with China, France, Russia, Britain, the United States, Germany, and the European Union.
In the agreement, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in return for the easing of economic sanctions.
However, the United States withdrew the agreement in 2018 during President Trump’s first term of office and again imposed sanctions on Tehran, which caused the agreement to collapse.
In response, Iran said it would reduce its commitment and no longer comply with restrictions in nuclear research or uranium enrichment rates.
