Jerusalem, Israel (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — In a firm stance, Israeli Foreign Minister Katz declared on Monday that Tel Aviv would not abide by the United Nations Security Council’s resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
“Israel will not cease its military operations. We will dismantle Hamas and continue the fight until all hostages are returned home,” Katz stated in a social media post on his account X.
The UN Security Council issued a resolution on Monday demanding a ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan, which commenced on March 11 and concludes on April 9.
With 14 countries in support, the resolution was put forward by 10 elected members of the Security Council, while the United States opted to abstain from the vote.
Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, asserted that the UN resolution “undermines efforts to secure” the release of Israeli hostages from Gaza.
The resolution calls for “an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan respected by all parties and leading to a sustainable and lasting ceasefire.”
Additionally, it demands the “immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to meet medical and other humanitarian needs.”
Israel has intensified its military assaults in Gaza since cross-border attacks initiated by Hamas, resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli casualties.
Since then, over 32,333 Palestinian civilians have lost their lives, with more than 74,694 injured amid mass destruction and shortages of essential supplies.
The Israel-Gaza conflict, now entering its 171st day, has displaced 85 percent of Gaza’s population amidst acute shortages of food, clean water, and medications, while 60 percent of the territory’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.
Israel faces allegations of genocide in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). A provisional ruling by the ICJ in January ordered Tel Aviv to halt genocidal actions and take steps to ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilian populations in Gaza.
