Malaysia Grants Permission for Indonesian Re-Vote, March 10

Jakarta (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — The General Election Commission (KPU) of Indonesia has secured approval from the Malaysian government to conduct a re-vote (PSU) in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

“Insha-Allah, on Sunday, March 10, 2024, the PSU in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, can be held,” said KPU member Idham Holik in Jakarta on Friday, March 8, 2024.

He explained that the permission was granted after the KPU and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur met with officials from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Malaysian government has facilitated venue permits and security arrangements.

“Indeed, the KPU team, including myself, met with officials from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he stated.

Earlier on Monday, March 4, the General Election Commission (KPU) sought assistance from Indonesian President Joko Widodo to organize a re-vote in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, due to specific policies regarding political activities of other countries in the neighboring nation.

KPU Chairman Hasyim Asy’ari explained that the policy pertained to the requirement of submitting permit applications three to six months before political events, such as elections from other countries, are held in Malaysia.

“There is recent information that the Malaysian government has created guidelines or protocols or some kind of SOP that for political activities by other countries in Malaysia, they must apply for permission and follow the procedures, ” said Hasyim at the KPU office in Jakarta on Monday, March 4, 2024.

According to him, if the activity is held within the premises of another country or within the jurisdiction of Indonesia, such as the Indonesian Embassy, Consulate General, Indonesian Representative Office, or Indonesian School, the permit must be obtained three months before the activity.

Meanwhile, permits for political activities outside the premises of another country must be submitted to the Malaysian authorities six months in advance. “However, previous election activities did not have such requirements,” he said.

With the introduction of this new policy, the KPU sought President Joko Widodo’s assistance to ensure that the re-vote in Kuala Lumpur could proceed.

The PSU in Kuala Lumpur will employ two methods and will take place over two days. These methods include voting at the polling station (TPS) and mobile ballot boxes (KSK).

The KSK method of PSU will be conducted on March 9, 2024, and the TPS method will take place the following day, March 10, 2024.

For the KSK method, the polling station organizing groups (KPPS) will provide supervision from start to finish. The next day, the ballots will be counted simultaneously with the results of the TPS method.

Additionally, the KPU has identified a list of overseas permanent voters (DPTLN) for the re-vote in Kuala Lumpur, amounting to 62,217 individuals.

Hasyim stated that this figure was obtained by the KPU from the total voters who participated in Kuala Lumpur through the three previous voting methods, whether recorded in the permanent voter list (DPT), additional voter list (DPTb), or special voter list (DPK).

The total number of voters for the three methods recorded in the DPT, DPTb, and DPK reached 78,000. This figure of 78,000 serves as the basis for data updates with three categories: address validity, duplicate analysis, and the validity of identification numbers (NIK) and passport numbers.
