Tunis (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — In response to the recent veto by the White House on Palestine’s bid for full United Nations membership, President Mahmoud Abbas has declared a reassessment of his administration’s stance towards the United States. The move comes as a direct reaction to the rejection of Palestine’s application for full membership in the UN.
President Abbas, speaking to the Palestinian news agency WAFA on Saturday, April 20, 2024, emphasized the need to review bilateral ties with the United States to safeguard the interests, goals, and rights of the Palestinian people. The decision reflects growing discontent and frustration within the Palestinian leadership over perceived U.S. bias in favor of Israel.
Citing remarks reported by the Russian news agency Sputnik, President Abbas condemned the U.S. veto as a blatant aggression against the rights, history, land, and dignity of the Palestinian people. He underscored that the veto not only defied the aspirations of the international community but also challenged the principles of international law.
During the UN Security Council vote on Thursday, April 18, 2024, President Abbas denounced the U.S. for its continuous support of Israeli occupation and its refusal to pressure Israel into halting what he described as its genocidal actions against Palestinians. He accused the U.S. of supplying weapons and funds to Israel, enabling the killing of Palestinian children and the demolition of Palestinian homes.
The Russian envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, highlighted the isolation of the United States during the Security Council vote, with only a handful of countries backing its stance. Notably, 12 other nations supported Palestine’s full membership, while countries like Britain and Switzerland abstained from voting.
The Palestinian President’s announcement signals a potential shift in diplomatic dynamics in the region and raises questions about the future of Palestinian-U.S. relations amid ongoing tensions and the pursuit of Palestinian statehood on the international stage.
