Police Probe BYD Seal Hit-and-Run on Sudyatmo Toll Road

The Traffic Directorate of Metro Jaya Police is currently investigating the driver of a BYD Seal electric vehicle suspected of fleeing the scene after a collision with a Chevrolet on the Sudyatmo Toll Road KM 22, heading toward Pluit, North Jakarta. The incident occurred on Saturday morning, May 3.

Deputy Director of the Metro Jaya Traffic Directorate, Police Commissioner Argo Wiyono, confirmed the development in Jakarta on Saturday. According to Argo, the BYD Seal driver was initially scheduled to be questioned on Wednesday, May 7. However, the individual, through their legal counsel, requested a postponement due to medical reasons.

“The person in question, via their attorney, has asked for a delay citing health concerns,” Argo stated.

As a result, the new examination date has been set for Wednesday, May 14. The authorities are hopeful that the driver will cooperate fully and attend the scheduled questioning.

“We hope the driver is cooperative and complies with our summons,” Argo added.

He emphasized that the police will handle the case professionally and proceed following Indonesian traffic laws and legal procedures.

“The legal process will continue based on the available facts and evidence. The police will remain objective and follow all applicable regulations,” he said.

The incident first came to public attention through a viral Video posted by the Instagram account @jakartabarat24jam. The footage allegedly shows the BYD Seal vehicle driving away after the crash, leaving the damaged Chevrolet overturned on the side of the toll road.

“The hit-and-run occurred on the Sudyatmo Toll Road toward Pluit. The BYD Seal, license plate B 1547 BNV, appeared to flee the scene after the crash,” the account wrote in its post.

More alarmingly, it was reported that the Chevrolet involved in the crash was carrying a 1.5-month-old baby at the time of the accident. The condition of the passengers, including the infant, has not been officially confirmed by authorities. However, this detail has sparked public concern and intensified scrutiny of the case.

The online community has since reacted strongly, urging the authorities to take swift and firm action. The behavior of the BYD Seal driver, especially considering the possibility of endangering a baby, has drawn widespread condemnation and revived discussions about road safety and accountability.

In response to the viral nature of the incident, Metro Jaya Police have assured the public that the case is being treated with urgency. Investigators are collecting witness statements, reviewing surveillance footage, and assessing vehicle damage as part of their ongoing inquiry.

“We are committed to uncovering the full truth. Anyone found guilty of violating traffic laws or attempting to avoid responsibility will be held accountable,” Argo reiterated.

The case has also placed a spotlight on the behavior of electric vehicle drivers on Indonesian roads. As the popularity of EVs like the BYD Seal grows, so too does the expectation that drivers uphold responsible and lawful conduct.

Authorities are expected to release a statement after the scheduled questioning on May 14. Meanwhile, the public continues to monitor the case closely, especially given the involvement of a high-profile vehicle brand and the disturbing hit-and-run allegations.

Metro Jaya Police encourage any witnesses or individuals with information related to the incident to come forward and assist the investigation.
