Puan Maharani Calls for Global Female Parliamentarians’ Action Against Conflict

Paris, France (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — The Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives (Ketua DPR RI), Puan Maharani, addressed the Women Speakers Summit 2024 at the High-Level Conference of the World Parliament of Women in France. She urged female parliamentarians worldwide to contribute to the resolution of conflicts.

Maharani emphasized the disproportionate impact of global conflicts on women, expressing concern that conflicts are increasingly being normalized as the “new normal.” She stated that women are not only victims of war but also find themselves in the most vulnerable situations.

“Women not only suffer the consequences of war but are also placed in the most precarious situations,” Puan said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Friday (03/08/2024).

Highlighting the plight of adolescent girls facing learning loss due to the destruction of schools and disruptions to educational activities in places like Gaza and Ukraine, she pointed out that limited access to formal education is prevalent in conflict-ridden regions such as Myanmar and Sudan.

In the presence of the Chairperson of the Belgian Parliament, Eliane Tillieux, and the Chairperson of the South African Parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Puan stated that women often become victims of human trafficking and violence resulting from conflicts. She argued that women’s rights to health are also increasingly neglected.

“As female leaders, we must take concrete actions. As the chair of the women’s parliament, we must contribute to efforts to end conflicts and foster peace,” she emphasized.

Maharani also stressed the importance of nations providing full access to health and education for women, asserting that this is key to a country’s prosperity.

“The progress and advancement of a nation depend on the progress of women. Therefore, I urge the present female parliament leaders to work together to promote the advancement of women in our respective countries,” she stated.

Consequently, she encouraged female parliamentarians worldwide to cultivate a culture of peace and tolerance. She also advocated for the rejection of violent means in resolving differences.

“Parliaments should contribute to ensuring women’s rights to education, access to health, and the rejection of various forms of violence against women,” she concluded.
