Religious Leaders Call for Unity Post-Election

Jakarta (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — In the wake of the announcement of the 2024 election vote tally by the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU RI), religious figures under the banner of the Forum Peduli Indonesia Damai (Indonesian Peace Care Forum) have come forward with a resounding message urging the preservation of peace and unity.

Xueshi Budi Tanuwibowo, the Chairman of the High Council of Confucian Religion (Matakin), emphasized the electoral process as a means to elect representatives and leaders that align with the people’s aspirations.

Stressing the importance of upholding unity and harmony, Xueshi reiterated the Forum’s sixth call for national cohesion during the declaration of the Forum Peduli Indonesia Damai on Friday (22/03/2024), as conveyed in a written statement received in Jakarta early Saturday (23/03/2024) morning.

Meanwhile, Marsudi Syuhud, Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), emphasized viewing the KPU RI’s tally results with compassion and benevolence. Marsudi highlighted the avenue for those dissatisfied with the outcomes to seek resolution through the Constitutional Court, urging acceptance without fostering animosity.

Commending the nation’s diverse participation in the 2024 elections, retired Major General Wisnu Bawa Tenaya, President of the Indonesian Hindu Dharma Council (PHDI), expressed gratitude to all sectors overseeing the democratic process and rectifying inaccuracies, fostering hope for the nation’s future.

Wisnu called upon all stakeholders to continue advocating for Indonesia’s unity and friendship.

Similarly, Judha Hartono, Chairperson of the Indonesian Buddhist Association (Permabudhi), urged elected officials to uphold and implement the nation’s foundational principles of Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), and the principle of unity in diversity (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika).

He further encouraged respectful reception of the KPU’s vote tally announcement.

Addressing the complexity of the democratic process, Jacky Manuputty, Secretary General of the Fellowship of Churches in Indonesia (PGI), underscored the necessity of learning from any shortcomings to pave the way for a stronger democratic legacy for future generations.

He expressed hope that these endeavors would contribute to the nation’s maturation in democracy.

The collective statements from these religious leaders serve as a call to action for all citizens to uphold peace, unity, and democratic values in the aftermath of the electoral process.
