Jakarta (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian expressed his hopes for Jakarta to emerge as a vibrant economic hub akin to New York City in the United States or Sydney and Melbourne in Australia.
“We also aspire for Jakarta to become one of the primary centers for economic activities, services, banking, and more. Essentially, we envision Jakarta to resemble the likes of New York in America or Sydney and Melbourne in Australia,” stated Tito during a Legislative Working Meeting between the Indonesian Parliament (DPR RI) and the Government at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday (13/03/2024).
Tito emphasized the need for a collective commitment between the DPR, DPD, and the government to elevate Jakarta into a world-class city or a global metropolis.
“This entails not only competing or being competitive at the Southeast Asian regional level but also standing on par with other advanced cities worldwide,” he remarked.
Representing the government, Tito conveyed these views while affirming the government’s support for deliberating the Special Capital Region of Jakarta Bill (RUU DKJ) as a consequence of Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning the Capital City (UU IKN).
“On behalf of the government, we agree to proceed with further deliberations together regarding the proposal or initiative for the Special Capital Region of Jakarta Bill, while ensuring alignment and compliance with relevant legislation,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the DPR RI Legislative Body, Supratman Andi Agtas, stressed the necessity for Jakarta’s development beyond being merely a national economic center and a global city.
“Jakarta must evolve into a major metropolitan city at the national, regional, and global levels, with the formation of agglomeration areas supporting integrated hinterlands, including Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Cianjur,” Supratman, who chaired the meeting, highlighted.
