Padang City (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — In a grim report issued by the Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto, West Sumatra is reeling from the aftermath of catastrophic floods and landslides that have claimed the lives of 30 residents. The devastation struck with particular severity, causing 27 fatalities in South Pesisir District and three in Padang Pariaman District.
Aside from the loss of lives, the hydrometeorological calamities have inflicted substantial damage to the region’s infrastructure. Initial estimates from the local government indicate losses exceeding Rp226 billion (approximately US$14.58 million).
In response to the unfolding crisis, the President has directed BNPB to swiftly address the situation. BNPB’s data reveals that floods have affected 12 districts and cities in West Sumatra Province. Out of these, five regions have declared a state of emergency, namely South Pesisir District, Padang City, Mentawai Islands District, Padang Pariaman District, and West Pasaman District.

Governor Mahyeldi of West Sumatra attributed the floods and landslides to various factors, including prolonged heavy rainfall lasting over 12 hours and malfunctioning drainage systems leading to blockages. Additionally, inadequate attention to regional spatial planning for infrastructure and residential development exacerbated the situation.
On-ground assessments have uncovered instances of deforestation and land deformation in the landslide-stricken areas, along with damages to river retaining walls. The situation calls for concerted efforts to mitigate the immediate impacts and address the underlying issues contributing to the disasters.
