Unified Declaration: Idul Fitri 2024 Set for April 10

Jakarta (BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE) — In the realm of religious observances, the declaration of Idul Fitri or Eid al-Fitr holds paramount importance for Muslims worldwide. This year, the Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs, officially announced that the 1st of Syawal 1445 Hijriah, corresponding to Idul Fitri 2024 Masehi, falls on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. This declaration was made following a conclusive decision during the “sidang isbat” (confirmation session) held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs office in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

The Government’s Announcement and Determination Process

During the press conference following the confirmation session, Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas elaborated on the basis for this decision. He stated, “Based on the observation of the hilal (crescent moon) position in the Indonesian region, which meets the criteria of MABIMS, and supported by reported sightings of the hilal, it has been agreed upon that the 1st of Syawal in the year 1445 Hijriah falls on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 Masehi.”

This announcement solidifies the alignment of the declaration of the 1st of Syawal 1445 Hijriah among various stakeholders, including Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, marking a unified observance of Idul Fitri.

Participation and Deliberations during the Confirmation Session

The confirmation session, attended by representatives from religious organizations, BMKG (Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency), BRIN (Indonesian Institute of Sciences), astronomical experts, representatives from friendly nations, and other invited guests, was conducted diligently. The session commenced on Tuesday at 5:00 PM local time and concluded with the formal declaration of the 1st of Syawal/Idul Fitri at 7:00 PM local time.

The proceedings began with open presentations regarding the position of the new crescent moon (hilal) based on astronomical data provided by experts. The Ministry of Religious Affairs also conducted monitoring, known as “rukyatul hilal,” at 127 locations across Indonesia. Reports from hilal observers working under oath in local religious courts, spanning from Aceh to Papua provinces, were also considered.

Expert Insights and Technical Details

Cecep Nurwendaya, a member of the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Hisab Rukyat Team, shared technical insights regarding the astronomical calculations. He affirmed, “The conjunction (ijtimak) of the moon occurred in the early hours of the day at 01:20:47 AM local time. Interestingly, the conjunction actually occurred on Monday (8/4) at 18:20:47 UTC.”

These technical details highlight the precision and accuracy employed in determining the commencement of Syawal 1445 Hijriah and consequently, the celebration of Idul Fitri 2024.
