JAKARTA, BERITAPOLITIK.ONLINE — Reading the Al-Quran is not just reciting Arabic letters without meaning, but also fulfilling the etiquette of the Great God’s revelation. Therefore, reading the Al-Quran must be with tajwid and tartil so that the meaning does not change, and so that the reading is in accordance with the guidance of the Prophet.
Tajwid is a science that teaches how to pronounce letters correctly from makhraj and its nature, while tartil means reading it slowly, calmly, and full of appreciation.
So why are tajwid and tartil so important when reading the Al-Quran? The following explanation is summarized from the official NU online website and various sources.
The reason for using tajwid and tartil is important
Al-Quran is a great divine kalam, a major guide for humanity in distinguishing between truth and lies. Because of its glory, every Muslim who reads the Al-Quran is required to do it with full accuracy, following the rules that have been determined, and not haphazardly.
As Allah SWT said in the Al-Quran:
وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا
“And read the Al-Quran slowly (tartil).” (Surah Al-Muzzammil: 4)
This verse becomes an affirmation that reading the Al-Quran should not be done in a hurry or carelessly. Tajwid science serves to maintain reading from mistakes that can change the meaning, while tartil helps so that every verse that is read can be covered and lived wholeheartedly.
By practicing both, the reading of the Al-Quran not only became beautiful to hear, but also brought the depth of meaning to the soul that reads it.
The importance of recitation is confirmed by a famous qira’at scholar, Sheikh al-Jazari, in the verse of his poetry in Manzhumah al-Jazariyyah:
وَالْأَخْذُ بِالتَّجْوِيدِ حِتْمٌ لَازِمُ # مَنْ لَمْ يُصَحِّحِ الْقُرآنَ آثِمُ
“Practicing the recitation is mandatory. Whoever does not justify his reading, then he has sinned.”
لِأَنَّهُ بِهِ الإِلَهُ أَنْزَلا # وَهَكَذَا مِنْهُ إِلَيْنَا وَصَلَا
“Because God lowered the Al-Quran along with how to read it, and that is the way to us.”
The Al-Quran is not only revealed in the form of noble lafaz-lafaz, but also with the correct reading method. This includes the pronunciation of letters according to his makhraj (makhārijul ḥurūf), the application of recitation laws such as in the letters of Nun and Mim Breadfruit, Rules of Long-Leading (MAD), as well as rules in stopping and starting reading (waqf wa ibtidā ‘).
According to Sheikh Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Ali bin Yusuf bin Al-Jazari, the Al-Quran was revealed by reading it at once, as a form of miracles and beauty, as well as to maintain the meaning contained in it.
Therefore, by understanding and mastering the science of recitation, a Muslim can read the Al-Quran properly and correctly, without obstacles.
However, to achieve this ability is not enough just to study alone. The process, perseverance, and guidance of the teacher who is competent are needed so that the science of recitation is not only understood in theory, but also applied in daily reading. Thus, the purpose of reading the Al-Quran according to the guidance of the Prophet can be realized perfectly.
